Looked After & Previously Looked After Children

At Burhill Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all children feel safe, valued and able to thrive. We recognise that children who are looked after by a local authority, and those who were previously looked after through adoption, a Special Guardianship Order or a Child Arrangements Order, may have experienced significant challenges and may require additional support to achieve their full potential.

We have high aspirations for all our pupils and are committed to promoting strong educational outcomes, positive wellbeing, excellent attendance and full participation in school life. Through our nurturing and inclusive approach, we work to remove barriers to learning and ensure that every child receives the support, encouragement and opportunities they need to succeed.

Our Designated Teacher, Mrs Waller, has responsibility for promoting the educational achievement of looked after and previously looked after children. Mrs Waller works closely with families, carers, social workers, the Virtual School and other professionals to ensure that each child's needs are understood and appropriately supported. This includes monitoring progress, attendance and wellbeing; supporting transitions; contributing to Personal Education Plans (PEPs) for looked after children; and championing each child's voice throughout their educational journey.

We recognise the importance of stable, positive relationships and work collaboratively with all those involved in a child's care to provide consistency, support and a strong sense of belonging. We are committed to helping every child develop confidence, resilience and independence so that they can flourish both academically and personally.
