Computing: Statement of intent

At Burhill Primary School, our computing curriculum is based around the National Curriculum aims of: understanding and applying the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science; analyzing problems in computational terms; evaluating and applying information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies; and enabling pupils to become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

Our curriculum develops problem solving skills, and it opens our students’ eyes to the digital world. Pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in the current digital age.

At Burhill, we are aware of the increasingly important role that technology is playing in people’s lives. Pupils will know how to stay safe online and the wider school community will be equipped to support them with this. They will understand that computing has deep links with other subjects within the curriculum and will be provided with the opportunity to apply their skills across all subjects.

At Burhill, pupils will become autonomous, competent users of computing technologies, gaining confidence and enjoyment through the learning opportunities provided. At the start of every year, all pupils are expected to agree to the terms laid out in our Pupil Acceptable Use Policy Agreement. In Key Stage 1, this agreement is shared and agreed to verbally. In Key Stage 2, this agreement is shared and agreed to with a signature in each pupil’s school planner.
